FLEMINGTON’S lawns today proved once more that anything goes on Cup Day.
Everything from the simple and subtle to the over-the-top and ostentatious was on show.
Many men opted for suits in bold primary colours. Some women opted for bright and tight dresses with hemlines better suited to nightclubs.
At Myer Fashions on the Field, fashionistas were firm that weather forecasts would not rain on their parade, showing off their sunny spring best.
They displayed a riot of flamboyant designs from floral to feathered, and lacy to racy. Ruffles, tassels and pompoms featured heavily, as did off-the-shoulder silhouettes and jumpsuits translated for the track.
While many competitors placed a high value on style and sophistication, emphasising gloves and brooches, some fashion was frightful: many looked as though they had recycled Halloween costumes from the night before, opting for shades of black and deep purple, face paint, capes, lace veils, bright hair and Mohawk headpieces.
One dress was made over almost eight months from more than $10,000 worth of TAB betting tickets.
Hats, many seeming to defy gravity, were big and bold. Sculptural designs dominated, as did bright feather plumage.
In a stark contrast to the monochrome tones of Derby Day, Cup fashion was in glorious technicolor: cheery pastels in pale pink, powdered blue, lilac and soft aqua proved popular, as did the citrus hues of the season, such as acidic lime, bright orange and iridescent lemon.
Stylish New Zealand sisters Olivia and Charlotte Moor swept the style stakes, being crowned the winner and second runner-up.
Both wore dresses and millinery made for them by their mother.
Olivia, who wore a red and white ensemble and tartan head piece, will return on Crown Oaks Day to compete in the state final.
She said fashion was a family affair: “This is such an awesome opportunity for us to do something together as a family with mum making our outfits. It’s like a dream.
“It’s so exciting to stand alongside my sister.”
