SUNSHINE dictated the fashions at Melbourne Cup, with a riot of colour trackside and plenty of skin on show.
It was a bright field of colour at Myer Fashions on the Field, with the fashionable flock embracing the flamboyance of our state’s signature social occasion.
Fluorescent pink, bold red and cobalt blue were all popular, but it was the citrus shades of the season in lime green, lemon and acidic orange that were most prevalent in the style stakes.
While some followed racing tradition in modest full skirts, sleeves and high necklines, others flaunted tightly fitted bodices, strapless designs and revealing cut-outs that flashed plenty of flesh.
Feminine florals, graphic prints and 50s-inspired full skirts proved popular, while hats were big and bold with sculptural lace, fresh flowers and structured feathers creating attention-grabbing detail.
More than 200 fashionistas posed and preened on the lawn before Emily Hunter, 28, of Richmond took out the top prize wearing a navy dress her mother made for her the night before.
“I couldn’t find a dress that did the hat justice, so my mum decided to make my dress on Sunday and finished it late last night,” said Ms Hunter, who topped off her homemade haute couture with a bespoke leather and lace headpiece.
She will now return on Thursday vying for the chance to represent Victoria in the prestigious Oaks Day national final.
Brightly clad racegoers also flooded the lawn on the most colourful day of the carnival’s calendar. Women revelled in the exuberance of the day with short dresses and whimsical hats, while men also embraced Flemington’s flamboyant side in colourful suits and fancy dress.
