BIG, bold and beautiful headwear is expected to be a feature of the Spring Racing Carnival this year referencing international events and designer runways.

Broad brimmed and dramatic hats are set for a comeback after a focus on finer crowns and fascinators in previous years.

Melbourne milliner Kim Fletcher says this season structured millinery and modern takes on classic shapes such as fedoras and boaters plus variations on berets will be popular.

She will be a part of a millinery exhibition opening on Thursday at Myer which showcases bespoke, one-off pieces from their stable of talented milliners from both Australia and overseas.

“The hat is back and this was my inspiration for my exhibition piece. Flourish is an exaggerated and oversized creation. It is a celebration of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, millinery, Melbourne and Myer,” Fletcher says.

She is one of 13 milliners taking part in the exhibition including Richard Nylon, Melissa Jackson, Kerrie Stanley and Phillips Rhodes.

Joanne Mercer, Myer General Manager Womens Footwear and Accessories, says Myer has a longstanding history of supporting racing across Australia.

“Throughout the spring racing carnival, our aim is to inspire and guide our shoppers and deliver scale and impact in our stores,” she says.

“Inviting our milliners to create incredible one-off designer headpieces and showcase these in our flagship Melbourne store is really exciting and we can’t wait to open the exhibition to our shoppers.”
