Feminine tailoring was key to both runway presentations on Wednesday night at the Virgin Australian Melbourne Fashion Festival.
Australian fashion icon Carla Zampatti’s Grand Showcase featured her classic tailoring with an exaggerated twist to create drama and impact.
Her signature corporate suiting was elevated a notch into evening wear, while other silhouettes played with volume. Large bubble dresses and oversized bows were balanced with kimono-style belts.

Singer-songwriter Dami Im created a masterful musical backdrop for the parade, which also showcased Zampatti’s trademark animal prints in zebra and leopard.
Runway three had a contemporary edge, kicking off with a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Melbourne-based label Viktoria and Woods. Soft tailoring and silks were a feature of their collection, which was followed by Acler with an emphasis on tailoring but with more feminine frills and flouncy shapes.
Bold and beautiful block-coloured hot pink and prints were a standout from Ginger & Smart, while Manning Cartel opted for a more structured aesthetic, featuring geometric patterns and colour blocking.
Khaki pieces featuring pockets and brass finishes gave Aje’s collection on show a utilitarian vibe.
This was contrasted against the finale of Rachel Gilbert’s lux evening wear incorporating beading, sequins, feather trims and teamed with elaborate jewelled accessories.
