IT’S game, set and match for tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis and his model girlfriend on the eve of the Australian Open.
Whispers have long been lobbing about the status of the Aussie tennis heartthrob’s so called year-long romance with Melbourne model and influencer Hannah Dal Sasso.
All the on-again-off-again rally rumours were not helped when ol’ mate reactivated his profile on celebrity hook up site Raya. Ouch!
Finding out your man is either back on the market, or worse hedging his bets both ways, after volleying back onto an A-list dating app is the modern day equivalent of a low blow, but more of that later.
And just when we thought The Kokk as he is colloquially known, was one of our only homegrown tennis stars not to serve up the petulant, all about me, controlling tennis bratty boy stereotype – thank goodness for Pat Rafter!
Alarm bells were ringing about the state of the Kokkinakis union with his Melbourne-based content creator girlfriend when she was nowhere to be seen at last week’s glam Piper-Heidsieck Summer of Tennis launch in Toorak heartland.
Kokkinakis was all smiles on the court, having a friendly round with athlete Peter Bol and Melbourne/Greek stunner Mary Vitinaros for the champagne brand, who are sponsors of the Australian Open.
Kokkinakis, who is besties and sometimes doubles partner with Nick Kyrgios, “hard launched” his relationship with Dal Sasso in March when they attended the flashy Glamour on the Grid ahead of the Australian Grand Prix where Dal Sasso revealed they’d met a “few months ago”.
Things escalated quickly from there with Dal Sasso joining Kokkinakis on the international tennis tour, travelling around the world together for the past six months.
“Wimbledon was amazing just because it was Wimbledon, but it was very formal and very different to what I expected,” Dal Sasso said.
“’I think my favourite grand slam was the French Open, but that is because Thanasi did really well making it through to the third round. I was having a proud girlfriend moment.”
Kokkinakis later paid tribute to Dal Sasso at the French Open, admitting that she was his “first girlfriend, probably ever.”
But the love match looked to be souring behind the scenes when the couple were making pains to arrive separately at the Melbourne Cup in their cha-ching commitments as ambassadors for sponsors, saying they like to keep their work and life separate. Give us a spell.
Influencer Dal Sasso has recently been carving a name for herself on the social scene, bobbing up in commercial roles at Melbourne Fashion Week and the Spring Racing Carnival as well as named ambassador for February’s Twilight Beach Polo event in St Kilda.
It’s no secret Raya, aka Illuminati Tinder, the membership-based dating app preferred by celebs and influencers - Olympia Valance met her now husband AFL’s Thomas Bellchambers on the app - becomes a hot-bed for tennis types looking for love around next month’s Grand Slam tournament at Melbourne Park, with the geo-locator pinging around Rod Laver Arena.
The only problem for stars like The Kokk, is that Australia has a fairly small celeb pool, making it very easy to be spotted on the exclusive dating site which is said to have a waitlist of 100,000. What a backhand.
