Keeping up his reputation as the nicest guy in rock ‘n’roll, Dave Grohl was on the tongs, working a mammoth 18-hour shift behind the grill following his sell-out shows to feed Melbourne’s homeless.
The Foo Fighters frontman is used to pulling an all-nighter, but surprised volunteers at The Big Umbrella foundation when he rocked up again on Friday to work the line, helping hand out the meals at Federation Square for the charity’s weekly Feed Melbourne program.
The Big Umbrella is a non-profit organisation set up in 2010 by founder and CEO Justin Dickinson. With a tagline “food rescue, feeding people, forming communities,” the charity has delivered 320,000 meals and “rescued” 492 tonnes of food.
Melbourne godfather of rock Michael Gudinski worked closely with the foundation before his death in 2021 and was instrumental in setting up The Big Umbrella kitchen in Brunswick during the pandemic, now dubbed “MG’s Kitchen.”
Grohl is in town for his sell-out stadium shows at AAMI Park with the Foo Fighters on Monday and Wednesday, with the band heading to Sydney to play on Saturday.
A good mate of Gudinski, the former Nirvana drummer is also known for his philanthropic efforts. He has often been pictured, cap on, head down, tongs in hand, tolling away behind the stove, helping out various charities in creating and delivering food with his commercial-sized “smoker” to those who need it most.
In March, Grohl was again spotted playing in-house chef, working a double shift behind the grill to help Feed the Streets non-profit organisation, serving underserved communities in Los Angeles.
Grohl worked in the kitchen on Thursday night the day after his Wednesday night gig, busily preparing the “restaurant-quality food” for The Big Umbrella.
Wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words, Feed Melbourne, Grohl kept a low profile with his cap on, working the line alongside lockdown comedy chef, Nat, black gloves on and smiling and joking with the community.
Rock on.
