Ryan Moloney has revealed he was planning to quit Neighbours before the axe fell on the much loved show.

Moloney, who played the character of Toadie – a Ramsay Street stalwart – for 28 years, said he had been ready to make a break from the iconic series this year, but then got wind that the end of the show’s long and successful run was looming.

“I was planning on leaving, I was thinking now is the time,” he said.

“But I have always said I want to ride the wave all the way to shore, so I am actually really grateful I got to do that and experience the end. What a wonderful thing to be able to do.”

Moloney was cast on the show for one scene in 1995 as Jarrod “Toadfish” Rebecchi.

“They just kept me coming back,” he said of his 28 year run on the show.

He said the reality of life without Neighbours had not truly hit him yet.

“I don’t think it has sunk in to be honest I keep thinking I have to turn up to work,” he said.

“The way I look at it is I have been there 28 years, I have seen people come and go, and when they go I always think they are going to go off on their adventure and so now I just feel like this is my adventure – who knows what will happen next.

“I am just really looking forward to spending time with my family, driving them around, doing all the day to day stuff.

“The kids are coming up to that precious important time of being teenagers and I want to be around for that.”

He said Neighbours was a show many people loved but had fallen out of the habit of watching – until it was too late.

“It was the comfy couch that you always took for granted, now you have thrown it out you realise you are going to miss it,” he said.

The final episode of Neighbours will now air on Channel 10 on Thursday, July 28.

Neighbours stars in tears at final farewell

Rising from the dead was a familiar plot line on Neighbours. Harold Bishop, one of Ramsay St’s longest lasting and most loved characters, was seemingly immortal.

Harold appeared to die in 1991 after being swept away by a rogue wave. His wife Madge was left devastated and fearing the worst as she found his mangled specs laying on a rock.

Five years later he bobbed up working the tins for the Salvos. Sadly, the same can not be said for Bouncer, Erinsborough’s beloved pooch.

Cast and crew, past and present, waved a final farewell to the media on Wednesday at the famed Nunawading studios, which was Erinsborough for almost 9000 episodes.

There were tears and celebrations. Susan Kennedy (aka Jackie Woodburne) said real alcohol was finally being served at the Waterhole.

Some cast members leaving the studios for the last time were seen nicking a few props from Lassiters. What would Paul Robinson say?

Channel 10 confirmed they will air the 90 minute finale of Australia’s longest running drama on its main channel on July 28.
