A “gronk” and “grubby buffoon” has been followed up with an eloquent “piece of shit” and a not-so-veiled “can’t wait to see you face-to-face” threat, in the latest radio war of words on and off air.
It’s hard to keep up with just who is firing back at whom. But trust Kyle Sandilands to bring the tone down a further notch.
After taking a bruising at being called a “grubby buffoon” by Saturday Herald Sun columnist Steve Price on The Project this week, following news the Kyle and Jackie O show will be syndicated to Melbourne, Sandilands tried to settle the score, leaving the stalwart broadcaster with a scalding voicemail:
“Hey you piece of shit, we’ve spoken before, last time you forgot that you’re not allowed to mouth off about me,” Sandilands said. “Steve it’s Kyle obviously, there is probably a long list of people who ring you.
“Again just surprised at your feigned reaction on The Project, can’t you just be yourself? Can’t you just say your true thoughts? I can’t wait to see you face-to-face buddy, it’s been too long.
“It’s disappointing that as you’ve gotten older you have turned into a real piece of shit.
“Feel free to play this on tonight’s Project because that’s the last gig you will ever have. See you mate, by the way love the alcoholic nose, bye bro.”
Cripes, having a crack at the nasal grog blossoms is a stretch too far!
Price was nonplussed at Kyle’s bullying banter and name calling, which also heard him describe The Project panellist as a “gronk.”
He doubled down, saying the Sydney shock jock just doesn’t get the Melbourne market.
“They kept ringing me trying to get me on air. But I didn’t answer,” Price told Page 13 on Friday. “I described him as a grubby buffoon and that’s it, I’ve had my say, I don’t need to enter into a long debate about it.
“Obviously I hit a nerve, he wouldn’t have reacted otherwise.”
Enter Neil Mitchell!
While Price couldn’t have given a toss about Sandilands, the man once known as the angry ant did take exception over Mitchell, who retires from radio on 3AW Mornings next week after an incredible 33 years on the airwaves.
Mitchell and Price go way back, with the two working together as talent and producer before sharing the airwaves at the 3AW network for more than a decade.
Mitchell weighed into the war of words, asking his listeners what a “gronk” was while failing to mention Steve Price’s name.
It’s Aussie slang for an “unintelligent or callous person.” Price was not fazed by the name-calling, just that his name wasn’t called at all.
“He refused to use my name of course, which he doesn’t do on his last two weeks on air despite our long friendship and working relationship,” Price said.
“I’m disappointed he can’t even mention my name and then Neil went on to say he agrees with Kyle, that the person being described as a gronk is a gronk.
“So I sent him a text message saying “I thought you were better than that”.
“He replied you have been sucked in.
“It’s all so pathetic.”
In the immortal words of Beyonce and Destiny’s Child: “Say my name!”
Page 13 has said it before, no one is more prickly than the ego-driven male shock jock.
“Particularly Neil and particularly Kyle,” Price said. “They hate being criticised. They do it to everyone else, but they hate it when it comes back to them.”
Something tells us this won’t be the end of this saga.
Stay tuned!
