Even the Duchess of Cambridge’s royal stamp of approval doesn’t mean a luxury label can withstand turbulent economic times.
Fashion designer Susie Cave, the wife and muse of Warracknabeal-born rocker Nick Cave, announced on Tuesday the shutting down of her cult Vampire’s Wife label with “great sadness”.
“It is time for me to say goodbye,” Cave said in a heartfelt post to social media, expressing her gratitude for all those who have supported her.
Founded in 2014 by the legendary 80s London it-girl and model, the darkly romantic brand became a go-to for celebrities and royalty alike, worn by Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss.
A beloved label in Kate Middleton’s style arsenal, she famously wore The Vampire’s Wife ‘Falconetti’ – named by Vogue as “the dress of the decade” – in iridescent green metallic for the royal’s first official portrait with Prince William in 2020.
The Duchess liked it so much she wore it twice, again in Dublin, and in a similar floor length version in shimmering pink design on a royal tour in Belize.
A small, independent brand with Gothic charm, the label had been struggling in the post-pandemic market and fast fashion rip off, stating they made the decision to cease trading with “immediate effect”, following an “upheaval in the wholesale market”.
Cave with her alabaster skin and onyx-black hair and her muso husband – they first crossed paths at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London – were last month spied in and around his former Melbourne hometown as he toured Australia for a run of solo shows.
