Channel 7 newsreader Karina Carvalho is officially moving to a weekend role starting on Saturday.

Carvalho, who joined Seven at the end of July after 17 years with the ABC, will co-anchor with Mike Amor after filling in for weekday newsreader Peter Mitchell for the past five weeks.

“You know you love your job when you have to work when everyone else is on holidays and you don’t mind it,’’ she said.

“The whole team that was on over summer was really fun.

“Mike is fantastic. I think when you’re working with a host it’s a real partnership and he’s so supportive and he’s so encouraging and he has so much experience. He’s just one of those nice guys of television and it’s such a privilege to sit alongside him and to work with him.

“I didn’t even dream it was possible but it’s happened and it’s very exciting.”

Carvalho is settling well into Melbourne life, and spent her day off on Wednesday at the Australian Open as a guest of Piper-Heidsieck.

She previously lived in Melbourne when she was part of ABC News Breakfast.

“Not being sent back and forth to Sydney is quite nice and I can feel like I’m settled back in Melbourne,’’ she said.

“I probably shouldn’t mention the ABC but it’s been so funny talking to some of my friends from there, because you don’t actually realise that there’s life after the ABC.

“It’s been great and just the breadth of opportunities and experiences that I get to have now has been fantastic. Even on Boxing Day I read the 6pm news but during the day I popped into the cricket and it’s just having the exposure to all of those different experiences.

“It’s what you want as a journalist, you don’t want to feel like you’re bored or you’re doing the same thing day in and day out. Every day I’m trying something new.”
