High-profile break-up headlines Melbourne’s “uncuffing season”

The swathes of breakups that seem to occur when the warmer weather starts have begun, with Lindy Klim to appear trackside without her husband of six years after the pair called it quits.

Uncuffing season is a modern-day term for the swathes of breakups that seem to occur when the warmer weather starts.

Melbourne is notorious for the uncuff as the Cup Carnival gets underway and the champagne is swilled in Flemington’s famed Birdcage. Last year it was all about the separate arrivals of tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis and his now ex Hannah Del Sasso (quick side note: the big server seems to be very cosy with Greek goddess Mary Vitinaros after they were seen hitting it off at a swish Piper – Heidsieck event earlier this year.

Then there was, of course, Entourage star Adrien Grenier who swooped in and stole corporate raider Nick Bolton’s missus for a night after a day at the track. The actor ended up having a brief dalliance with another of our richlisters, Georgia Geminder.

This year Lindy Klim will be inside the exclusive Landmark by Lexus without her former plus-one husband of six years Adam Ellis after the two recently split. The Balinese princess packed up back to her former Melbourne base and will be with her equally genetically blessed daughter, Stella, for Derby Day.

But it can also be a time to cuff, the antithesis of uncuffing, with plenty of romances, some more short lived than others, blooming among the Flemington roses.

Fresh from their pre-nuptials European vacation, comedian Andy Lee and his now fiance Bec Harding will be flying into the Birdcage in style by chopper as guests of Crown alongside Bec Judd and husband Chris. It was inside the Birdcage when Lee and Harding were said to have rekindled their love after a short break, and now it’s all roads to a lavish wedding for the likeable duo.

Who can forget prominent investor and philanthropist Alex Waislitz debuting his now fiance turned eye-popping reality popster Rebekah Behani at Derby some years back?

Elsewhere, there will be plenty flying solo, with our Aussie models in abundance. While Jess Gomes’ rumours with Dustin Martin just don’t go away, she will also be pressing the flesh inside the Lexus pavilion, as will fellow model turned actor Abbey Lee Kershaw. But it’s at the Derby Day after-party where things get really spicy. This year Don Julio and Bar Bambi have teamed up and the Russian tsar bars will be throwing one to remember! Or at least try to! Tequila!
