‘Best day of my life’: Cancer patient’s adoring words for Steven May and Jack Crisp

They’ve made off-field headlines before — and for some not-so-great reasons — but this time, Jack Crisp and Steven May took time out of their days to help kids with cancer.

His off-field antics saw him labelled with the “AFL bad-boy” tag.

Last year, he made headlines for getting into a scuffle at fancy Greville St restaurant Entrecote with Melbourne teammate Jake Melksham.

Just last month, Steven May’s off-the-cuff comment during a speech at the club’s best and fairest that Melbourne “should have smoked” Collingwood in their qualifying, caused a backlash about the culture at the Demons.

But we also have to give credit where credit is due.

May took time out on Thursday to join one of those premiership players he should have smoked. May joined Jack Crisp (who also garnered headlines of his own this year) to bring joy to young cancer patients and their families at theme park Gumbuya World.

The amusement theme park and home to “the giant pheasant” has had a serious rejuvenation and zhoosh up in recent years.

Melbourne sporting greats put footy rivalries aside to help the My Room children’s cancer charity.

May was the star among the brave kids, showing a softer side as he jumped on the tut-tut train and walked hand-in-hand on a wildlife tour with new mate Wyatt Dickinson, a four-year-old with acute myeloid leukaemia.

AFL stars are often pointed to as having privileges the average Australian is denied, earning millions of dollars a year, enjoying luxury holidays and being the envy of many.

But there is a lot not written about, including days like The Stars Align for My Room on Thursday, with little Wyatt later describing it as “the best day of my life so far.”

“Wyatt is a little legend, love his character,” said a humbled May.
