Is Sam Pang Melbourne’s most reluctant it-guy?
The Front Bar and Have You Been Paying Attention panellist was the standout at Sunday’s Logie Awards, with his droll sense of humour, quick wit and ability to get a laugh without going below the belt for grubby gags.
Andy Lee this week told Pang’s Nova radio station that Nine’s director of TV, Michael Healy, turned to him on the night with a glint in his eye saying “we’ve got to get this guy” to host next year’s Logies.
But those close to Pang say he would never do it.
It takes a special someone to be able to contrive a sweet deal to work across multiple rival TV networks and radio, call their own shots, and ever so politely enforce a blanket but firm n-o to media profile and feature requests.
That special someone is Sam Pang.
The man of mystery shuns the glitz and glamour that goes with the industry.
You will rarely hear him talk about his private life and when he isn’t working on Nova’s Chrissie, Sam and Brownie brekkie show or on TV, is usually found perfecting his game on the golf course with his ol’ mate Jonathon Brown.
A bottle shop attendant at 28 and avid footballer, Pang was late to the showbiz game, starting out on the airwaves by volunteering at 3CR in Collingwood to later kicking off his TV career by hosting a history quiz show on SBS called ADbc in 2009.
A good networker and immensely talented, doors quickly opened, with Working Dog productions – the best in the biz for scouting our homegrown comedy gold – quickly jumping on board the Pang train.
Turns out we can thank his Front Bar co-host Mick Molloy for Sam’s reticence. The comedy veteran gave him some early sage advice – don’t do any press.
