Melbourne doctor calls for lockdown booze ban amid obesity fears

For many Victorians, the coronavirus-induced lockdown has cost them work, social life and any sense of stability. Now, a Melbourne GP wants to add booze to the banned list. Here’s why.

The ABC’s coronavirus go-to doctor, Norman Swan, made global headlines this week after warning his podcast listeners against “bare-bottom farting” for fear of spreading COVID-19.

“Two Australian doctors are weighing in about the spread of the coronavirus “down under” — whether it can be spread through farts, that is,” wrote a delighted New York Post.

Now, an Armadale doctor is hoping the government will enforce restrictions on the consumption of booze to avoid us becoming a city of fatties.

Dr Peter Lewis says we are all bingeing on too much plonk to get ourselves through iso.

Duh.

The good doctor says the recent spike in alcohol consumption is a worrying symptom of lockdown and that we are all becoming Norms (remember the beer-swilling bloke on the couch for Life. Be In It ads, pictured).

Dr Lewis says we need to be healthier and fitter to fight the coronavirus.

Can’t we regard a bottle of wine as two standard drinks in iso-times?

That's a big fat no from Dr Lewis, who soberingly told Page 13 there is a direct link between COVID-19 and obesity.

Studies around the world showed some of the sickest COVID-19 patients were considered obese and were having the most trouble recovering in ICU.

“The party is over,” Dr Lewis said. “It’s time to fight. Flatten your curves, while flattening the curve.”
