Surviving a near-death experience can change a man.
Living legend Jeff Kennett thought he had met “his Waterloo” when his BMW X5 dragged him down his driveway as he bent to take out some rubbish in January.
Kennett opened up this week about the driveway drama that resulted in serious neck surgery and a temporary loss of his voice, saying he thought his “time was up.”
The two-time Liberal premier tried to leap into the rolling SUV as it gained momentum and crashed through the metal gates at his Surrey Hills home.
A bit like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.
“I was only using one arm, unfortunately I couldn’t get all the way in and the car door was still open,” Kennett said.
The freak accident has put the Hawks prez in a reflective mood. He is using his time in self-imposed coronavirus isolation to declutter the house, Marie Kondo style.
“Felicity and I are down on our knees cleaning out filing cabinets and looking at material going back 40 years,” he said.
“We laugh, we chuckle, then we deliver it to the bin.
“We are doing the first clean before our children have to do it when we depart.”
It’s not often the former premier is lost for words, but it was short lived.
“I lost my voice for about eight weeks,” he said.
“Now I’m saying, look out, I’m about to start the next phase of my life.
“I’ve got a lot of living to do and a couple of premierships to win.
“I’m on my way back.”
Forget Tom Cruise, sounds more like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
