How backyard Botox has boomed in lockdown

Skin is sagging and plumped-up lips are deflating in lockdown and many have resorted to backyard Botox jabs from less than professional practitioners. But the real housewives of Toorak will be all frozen smiles at this week’s latest news.

Australians splash billions on cosmetic surgeries

Crow’s feet are flying back, lips are lacking lustre and plumped-up pillow faces are deflating.

Skin is sagging and the real housewives of Toorak have resorted to backyard Botox.

Less than professional practitioners have been giving jabs on the Botox black market.

One Botox dealer told Page 13 she was still in business in the backyard of her blue-chip pile.

“Everyone needs their migraine medicine,” she wrote in a text without a hint of raised eyebrow.

Some say Botox relieves headaches, but some were caused when anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and cosmetic Botox were ruled out on March 25 to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

But a month later and Page 13 can report Botox is back, baby!

On Friday, the Australasian Society of Plastic Surgeons announced that certain cosmetic injectables could be used within a controlled environment as COVID-19 restrictions loosened.

With backdoor Botox on the rise it comes in the nip-tuck of time. Loosening restrictions means tightening up faces.

Plastic surgeon to the stars, Dr Chris Moss of Liberty Belle in Toorak told Page 13 some wrinkle-reduction procedures were allowed.

“Certain limited types of Botox, fillers, lasers, skin tightening have been given provisional provisions that they can occur as long as there is a medical practitioner present on the premises and as long as all precautions are taken,” Dr Moss said on Friday.

Dr Moss said his team at Liberty Belle were reopening as early as next week for certain treatments.

“But again, things need to be done in a safe environment with all strictest infection control precautions.”

Dr Moss said patients would be screened for COVID-19 on arrival and proper protective equipment use and social distancing measures put in place.

“All these are measures we have been doing in our practice the whole time.”

Dr Moss stressed it was not business back as usual.

It’s not all silver de-linings.

Those who favour a, er, swollen lip will still have to wait. Lip fillers are still considered a no-go zone.

“Treatments that cannot occur is filler around the lips where there is saliva and lasers immediately around the mouth,” Dr Moss said.

So, while there is no longer a need for a puff-up by the poolside, trout pouts are still out.
