Logies Red carpet: Spat erupts over designer gowns

Sophie Monk and Ada Nicodemou are at the centre of an ugly fashion spat over their showstopping red carpet dresses, a stylist hitting back at social media comments from a rival designer.

A style spat has erupted after last night’s Logie awards with two similar dresses appearing on the red carpet.

Melbourne designer Jason Grech dressed Sophie Monk in a show stopping gold foil dress — but he has drawn comparisons to another metallic gown worn on the red carpet by Home And Away actor Ada Nicodemou.

Grech took aim at the stylist who dressed Nicodemou in a similar gown, posting to Facebook: “I have to call this out.

“A stylist asked to borrow the DIANA dress (worn by Sophie) for the Logies for their client Ada.

“I couldn’t accommodate the request because it had Sophie’s name all over it.”

The respected stylist at the centre of the storm, Donny Galella, hit back at the claims that he copied Grech’s gold-themed styling for Sunday night’s Logie Awards, saying: “When Ada and I first met, we agreed to do a modern golden, Grecian Goddess-style dress.

“Gold and high splits are both really popular trends at the moment, as we saw on the red carpet last night.

“Designer Steven Khalil based Ada’s dress on a design that he is about to show from an upcoming collection, but created in gold for Ada.”

Nicodemou appeared on the red carpet in a foil metallic fabric, a strapless silhouette and a thigh-high split.

According to Grech, he was first contacted by the stylist on the first week of April, who wanted to dress Ada in the now infamous gold dress.

“I wasn’t sure if Ada was the right fit for that dress, so I suggested different styles, and I continued to go back and forth with her stylist,” Grech said.

“Then I received a text message from the stylist thanking me, but informing me that due to Ada’s Sydney schedule she would have to go with a local designer.”

He told the Herald Sun it “never crossed my mind” after that message that the actress might appear in a similar gown on Logies night.

“Since showing this gown for the first time at Virgin Australia Melbourne fashion festival in March, we have continued to remodel and tweak the design numerous times with different fabrics and playing with the length of the underskirt,” he said.

“I have invested so much into this design.

“I hate drama, but I had to call it out.

“At least Sophie looked amazing and the positive feedback on her look has made the kick a lot less hurtful.”
