Katy Perry excited to ‘bring the music’ at T20 world cup final

Aussies are used to a different Perry lighting up the cricket ground, but tomorrow Katy Perry will take to sport’s most hallowed turf in front of a hopefully record-breaking crowd at the women’s T20 World Cup final.

Katy Perry says she’s ready to roar, and a sellout crowd at the MCG might just be roaring back at her tomorrow.

Hot on the heels of announcing her first pregnancy, Perry is in Melbourne to perform at the Womens T20 World Cup final.

“I’m excited to bring the music,” Perry said.

“I’ve heard the (crowd) number has been going up steadily especially with who is now playing which is so exciting – that’s the biggest cricket game in the world right there, female or not.”

Australia takes on India in the final, and with 75,000 tickets already sold, the clash could potentially break the world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event.

While Perry admits she’s not a huge cricket fan, she said there are some similarities between sport and music.

“I don’t really know how to play and have never played (cricket) so it’s foreign to me but I love the community of sport and it’s similar to the community of music,” she said.

“They are all shouting the same thing all feeling the same energy and you can make friends with a stranger right next to you because you support the same team.”

“There is camaraderie and community in sport which is kind of scarce these days, so I feel it’s a lot like music which is why I love it.”

The clash coincides with International Women’s Day, and Perry said it was like the fates were aligning.

“I hope every day everything I do in some small way, or maybe tomorrow in a big way can be inspirational,” she said.

“My intention is always to inspire and support.

“I mean how great is it on international women’s day and it’s female cricket, it’s like are we in a simulation or is just how God is saying ‘hey, let’s all come together and lift up women and support them’ like they should be.”

Perry has already been in Australia for a few days visiting bushfire-affected communities in Victoria, and has developed an appreciation for the oddities of Australian culture.

“I really fancy you guys can have a whole meal in a meat pie and just pop it in your mouth and you are done, on the go too,” she said.

“I’ve pet the koalas and seen the kangaroos … I always take in the natural parts of Australia.”

With a whole catalogue of hits to choose from, Katy Perry fans can expect a stellar show when she takes to the stage tomorrow.

“I’m going to give them what they know,” she said.

“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot.

“You came for ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework’ and that’s what I’m going to give you.”
