Katy Perry will perform at a free concert for bushfire-affected communities in Victoria’s northeast next week.
The US superstar is coming to Australia to perform at the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup cricket match at the MCG on March 8.
After the performance, the singer is staying in Australia for a few days to undertake early promotional duties for her next album and is scheduled to head to Bright on March 11.
Residents of affected towns are expected to be bussed in to watch her performance for free – with the publicity designed to help Bright rebuild the community.
The state government confirmed the “FIGHT ON” concert this morning, to be held at Pioneer Park.
“I thank Katy for offering to put on this free show for communities that have been affected by bushfires,” Tourism and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula said.
“It will be incredibly exciting for many people who have had a really tough summer, and it recognises the outstanding efforts of our emergency services.”
Bright, which relies on tourism for its economy, took a major hit in January with visitors avoiding the area due to smoke haze and bushfire fears.
Business owners were reporting losses of up to 75-per-cent, however this month has seen fortunes start to turn around.
While promoting her ICC performance, Perry had told interviewers she wanted to do something to give back to bushfire-affected communities in Australia.
Bright is located three hours out of Melbourne’s CBD in the Alpine region of Victoria, and is famous for outdoor activities from kayaking and bushwalking in summer to snow activity in winter, as well as wineries, cafes and restaurants.
Perry’s last album Witness was released in 2017, and she released three singles last year – Never Really Over (written with Australians Hayley Warner and Leah Haywood), Small Talk and Harleys in Hawaii.
