Hugh Sheridan says he was given a ‘roofie’ by manipulative couple

Popular actor Hugh Sheridan says he was drugged and held against his will for eight hours by a couple who secretly dosed him with a date rape medication.

The Packed To The Rafters star, who is in Melbourne to headline the Broadway musical Tick Tick ... Boom!, said the incident happened five years ago, and he knew one of his assailants.

“A few years ago, this is a true story ... I actually got … someone drugged me, two people drugged me, and I knew one of them,” Sheridan told the 88.3FM radio show, Sounds Good With Donna Demaio, which will air on Tuesday night.

Asked if it was “roofie situation” — slang for being unknowingly dosed with the date rape drug Rohypnol — Sheridan replied: “Yes. I was stuck for eight hours, but I managed to get out.”

Sheridan said the incident occurred “later in life, and people knew who I was. It didn’t happen when I was 16 or 17. I knew one of the people (involved), I just never thought it would happen, and it was a very scary situation.

“But once the drugs started to wear off and I realised that I was in trouble, I just kept saying ‘As if!’ It was like, “Oh my God, how could this be happening to me? How could this situation happen? What do they think they’re getting away with?”

Sheridan said he woke up to find himself at a property in Double Bay.

“I had to get out. I had to escape,” he said. “When I left I had no phone, no wallet, no shoes.”

Did Sheridan know what happened while he was unconscious?

“I don’t fully know, but I did get to my sisters house in Randwick. She said, ‘Do you remember the address? I said, ‘Yep.’ I did not want to go back at all, but she went (to the property), ‘I am here for my brother’s things, and marched on in, and got my stuff.’

“I was very scared, but she wasn’t. She’s very tough, my sister.”

Sheridan did not file a police complaint over the incident.

He said the couple was “manipulative.”

“After a few years, you feel like you can talk about these things. It is important to talk about it ... and shine a light on it.”

Sheridan has survived some dark times in the last few years.

His father, Denis, a cabaret singer, passed away last February, Sheridan got engaged then split from his fiance, and he was “cancelled” after transgender activists protested about his casting in the lead role for the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Sheridan has been cast as the leading man (below) in Tick, Tick ... Boom!, an autobiographical musical about US playwright Jonathan Larson.

Thematically, the musical is about the ever-ticking clocks of potential and life. Sadly, Larson died in 1996 before his hit musical Rent opened on Broadway.

“Tick, Tick ... Boom! is about someone who’s running out of time,” Sheridan said.

“I feel like that a lot. It’s so hard to not compare yourself to where you want to be. I should be married with children, I should have houses. By the time my dad was my age, he had five children, and two houses.”

“I’ve got nothing,” Sheridan said, laughing.

“You just go, ‘What am I doing with my life?’”

Tick, Tick ... Boom! plays at the Comedy Theatre from February 1 to 12.
