Wayne Carey’s ex fears reliving ‘dark’ times

Wayne Carey’s ex-girlfriend has voiced fears her former partner will open old wounds when he goes on national television.

Former Melbourne socialite Kate Neilson says she hopes the “dark period” of her life when she was glassed by her then-boyfriend Wayne Carey during a US holiday is not revisited as part of the former footballer’s appearance on the TV reality series SAS Australia.

Now an actor based in Los Angeles, Neilson was allegedly hit in the face with a wine glass and suffered a cut lip during an argument between the pair in Miami in 2007.

Carey was arrested for assaulting police following the incident, and in 2008 a US court placed him on two years’ probation without recording a conviction.

Carey is believed to refer to the incident on his stint on SAS:Australia, a show that is part Survivor and part celebrity confessional.

He says, in a promo for the show, sleeping with Kelli Stevens, the then-wife of his North Melbourne teammate Anthony Stevens, was the biggest regret of his life and he is haunted by it.

Neilson, who remains in contact with Carey, said she wanted to leave the alleged glassing incident in the past.

“The incident was so long ago now and it was a dark period of our relationship, but I can say with certainty the glass of wine was intentionally thrown into my face and smashed my mouth pretty bad,” she said.

“I remember bleeding a lot and the table cloth was white so I saw it everywhere.

“(It is) definitely something I well and truly want to leave behind me.”

Carey has admitted over the years that he intended to throw wine over Neilson but did not mean to make contact with her with the glass.

Carey and Neilson’s tempestuous relationship was never far from the headlines in the early 2000s.

“I guess I stayed with him for so long because I was so in love at the time,” she said.

“I’ve learnt a lot from my past relationship with Duck.

“I just know, today, after all these years I would never allow myself to be in a toxic situation again with a guy.”
