Has famed AFL coach Kevin Sheedy unwittingly been a cog in the wheel that have brought the feuding Gallagher brothers of Oasis fame back together.
The wise owl of footy, Sheedy, told hothead Liam Gallagher to build a bridge with his brother Noel, when the pair met in a corporate box at an English Premier League soccer match in the mid-2000s.
Greater Western Sydney Giants CEO Dave Matthews revealed Sheedy’s peacemaker role in a recently unearthed episode of the BackChat podcast.
Gallagher breezed into the box and bizarrely he and Sheedy hit it off.
“We watched the rest of the game and these guys are getting on like a house on fire,” Matthews said.
“At halftime, he (Gallagher) was talking to Sheeds, and he said, ‘We should get a photo’.”
Then Sheedy went where few men have feared to tread — he asked about Noel.
“Sheeds says, ‘How’s your brother going?’,” Matthews said.
“And Gallagher said, ‘I’ll f---ing tell you how he’s going, he’s in a box over there with Tom Cruise, and I’m here with you, you geezer’.
“He said, ‘Look, you want to know how my brother’s going? We’re getting offered a lot of money to get back together and play again’.
“And Sheeds said, ‘No, no, I don’t care about your music — I don’t even know it. I’m just saying life’s short mate, build a bridge with your brother, you’ve got to get back together. And do it out of the spotlight, just reconnect, mate. I’ve dealt with my own family and I’ve dealt with a lot of families and I just think it’s a huge mistake you’re making’.”
“Gallagher said something like, ‘You know what, I’ve engaged five lawyers and I’m paying them a lot of money, and no one’s given me as good advice as that’.”
Fast forward to 2024 and the biggest story in entertainment is that Oasis is reforming with a world tour on the cards next year.
