Australian Football Hall of Fame legend Kevin Sheedy says he is “feeling good” and relieved to be back in Melbourne following a recent health scare while visiting family on the Sunshine Coast.
Sheedy, 76, told the Herald Sun on Friday that he was undergoing further tests to identify the cause of his health issue.
He spent time in recent days in a Queensland hospital after becoming ill with fever and requiring medical attention while on holidays.
He was transferred to a Melbourne hospital on Thursday, and expects to remain there for at least a week as doctors undertake more tests.
“I’m feeling good,” Sheedy said on Friday.
“I’m happy to be back in Melbourne. I’ll be undergoing some further tests (while in hospital).”
Sheedy, who stepped down from the Essendon board recently, is one of the game’s most loved and respected characters.
He was a three-time premiership player with Richmond and coached Essendon to four flags in an extraordinary 27-season career, while he was also Greater Western Sydney’s inaugural coach, leading the Giants in their first two seasons.
Sheedy has been one of the sport’s greatest innovators, both on and off the field, including revolutionising multi-positional players, promoting the game all across Australia, and also being one of the key architects of the Essendon-Collingwood Anzac Day blockbuster clash and the Dreamtime at the ‘G game between Essendon and Richmond.
In a statement released last week, Sheedy’s wife, Geraldine, and the Sheedy family said: “Kevin was visiting family on the Sunshine Coast when he got a fever and sought medical treatment.
“He has since been admitted into hospital to undertake tests to determine the cause of the problem.
“Like all sports people, he’d prefer not to be spending time on the bench and he’s looking forward to getting back to Melbourne and resuming his commitments as soon as possible.”
