The soap opera gods have delivered the fairytale ending Neighbours fans were hoping for with superstar Kylie Minogue finally returning to Ramsay Street.
Minogue and Jason Donovan are understood to have secretly reprised their iconic roles as Charlene Mitchell and Scott Robinson on the much loved Australian soap opera.
The pair confirmed the reunion on social media on Sunday morning, after a Sunday Herald Sun exclusive story.
Kylie shared the first half of a confirmation post on her Instagram, while Jason shared the second half on his, in a coordinated approach.
Minogue appeared on Neighbours as the frizzy haired tomboy Charlene from 1986 to 1988.
The show was the launching pad for her hugely successful international singing career that continues without fault today. Donovan also launched a chart topping singing career off the back of the show.
The love affair, both on screen and in real life at the time, between Minogue and Donovan captivated millions of viewers in Australia and UK in the late ‘80s.
The famous pair is believed to have filmed their guest appearance on the show at Pin Oak Court in Vermont South late last week.
It is expected that the much hoped for return to Ramsay Street of Minogue and Donovan as the idyllic couple Scott and Charlene will play out as part of the final episode of the show.
Neighbours will cease production on June 10 after 37 years. It has been based in Melbourne during its entire epic run.
The show’s final episode will air in Australia on Monday, August 1 on 10 Peach.
Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison said the return of Minogue and Donovan to Neighbours was the perfect way to end the show.
“Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them,” he said.
“We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale.
“It has been an emotional experience for them, for us and I’m sure it will be for our viewers.”
Donovan arrived in Australia from the UK last week. Minogue, who moved home to Melbourne last year after more than 30 years based in London, recently returned to town after completing several weeks of overseas work commitments.
Channel 10 and Fremantle, the company that produces Neighbours, declined to comment on Saturday when asked about Minogue and Donovan’s return to Ramsay Street.
It is expected a long roll call of famous names from the show’s past will film appearances during the final weeks of production.
Channel 10 tried valiantly to save the show after its commissioning partner Channel 5 in the UK did not renew its deal. The search for a white knight new production partner was ultimately unsuccessful leading to the sad decision to bring the show which has been such an important part of the Australia TV landscape for more than three decades to an end.
The enduring soap has been a star factory for talent such as the aforementioned Minogue and Donovan along with the likes of Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Liam Hemsworth, Delta Goodrem, Daniel Macpherson, Jesse Spencer, Holly Valance, Natalie Imbruglia, Jason Donovan, Ashleigh Brewer, David Hoflin, Dichen Lachman, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Olympia Valance, April Rose Pengilly and Radha Mitchell.
