TV LEGEND Denise Drysdale has broken her silence on her “feud” with Ita Buttrose, admitting she threw a brussels sprout at the media doyen.

Drysdale said rumours of a rift between the popular panellists on Studio 10 stemmed from the airborne sprout incident at the show’s unofficial Christmas lunch last year.

TENSIONS FLARE BETWEEN ITA BUTTROSE AND DENISE DRYSDALE ON ‘STUDIO 10’

“I threw the brussels sprout at her (Ita) — I have to admit that — at the Christmas party and I did the wrong thing, so it is totally my fault,” Drysdale said.

“I was in a jovial mood. The (official Studio 10) Christmas party was that night and I could not go, so I had a couple of glasses of champagne towards the end of the day and I threw the brussels sprout and I shouldn’t have.”

In the past week, Buttrose’s surprise at being used as a target for the much maligned vegetable was pinpointed as leading to friction between the women.

But Drysdale dismissed talk of any long-running rift between the pair, saying they are on speaking terms and Drysdale said she had apologised.

“I rang Ita for Christmas; we talk, we all get along. I did the wrong thing, it was totally my fault, I am sorry it happened,” she said.

Drysdale said she had the utmost respect for Buttrose and was disappointed that a fizz-fuelled toss of a side-dish sprout had caused such controversy.

“I totally respect her and it was my fault for throwing the bloody brussels sprout,” she said.

“Everyone is a professional on that show and I just love being a part of it.”

A shuffle in seating positions on Ten’s morning chat show was offered as evidence of tension between the pair, as was rumours of a behind-the-scenes turf war over dressing room space.

The dressing room drama is “ridiculous, totally ridiculous,” Drysdale said.

“There is a very limited amount of dressing rooms at Channel 10. Ita was there for the first year, five days a week, and then I came in,” she said.

“When she wasn’t in, I had the dressing room, then I moved to another dressing room.

“Jess (Rowe, fellow panellist) and I have become the firmest of friends. I cook for her, we go out, we even have a podcast coming, so we have this connection, we have so much fun and I dearly love her, and so we decided to share a dressing room a year and a half ago.

“I did not want to be in a dressing room on my own, I hate it, I am on my own all the time.”

According to Drysdale, the shuffle of seating positions on the panel had nothing to do with Sproutgate.

“They made the changes because Joe (Hildebrand) has been on that side (of the panel) for three years or something and they wanted the bloke in the middle and two women either side,” she said.

“You will see another difference soon, we are not walking on (to the set), we will just be sitting there (when the show opens).”
