Podcaster and golf enthusiast Sam Newman has shelved plans to run for Melbourne Lord Mayor.
Newman, known for his forthright opinions, confirmed last month he had been sounded out about running for the exalted position and was contemplating launching a bid.
It is not the first time the position has appealed to him. He was serious about having a crack at the role in 2018, however he was in America on a golfing assignment for Channel 9 on the day he was supposed to lodge his nomination in person.
This time round the former Footy Show star said he was only interested in standing for election if current Lord Mayor Sally Capp was not going to recontest the role.
A recent call to Capp ended his Mayoral plans.
“I said all along if Sally Capp does not stand I would,” Newman said.
“I am not interested in standing against her because that would look like a vote of protest against her.
“I have said all along if she did not want to do it I would throw my hat in the ring and I would be definitely interested in standing for Lord Mayor, so I rang her up to tell her that and obviously she is standing again. So, that is that.”
