Sam Newman blows his stack as Don Scott quits their podcast

The future of Sam Newman’s podcast is now in doubt after co-host and Hawthorn legend Don Scott dramatically quit the controversial You Cannot Be Serious podcast on Wednesday.

Sam Newman fires up at podcast co-host

Hawthorn legend Don Scott has quit the controversial You Cannot Be Serious podcast in the fallout following co-host Sam Newman exploding at him for eating while on air and fiddling with a microphone last week, in a move that could spell the end of the podcast.

Scott stunned Newman by saying during the recording of the show on Wednesday morning that he would not be returning after the pair’s on-air falling out.

Scott walked out of last week’s show after Newman told him to “f**k off.”

Newman described Scott’s decision as a “pathetic act of treachery.”

“I don’t think it was a great surprise,” Newman said of Scott’s dramatic announcement.

“Don left early (last week) and came late today. I actually am not sure what he came in for.

“Maybe it was just to tell us he was quitting and couldn’t pick the phone up to tell us.”

Newman said still considered Scott a friend despite their spat.

“I am a friend of Don’s, yes, nice to know who you are dealing with though, someone who won’t stand up and face the music if you have a disagreement, not sure how that works,” he said.

“Walking away from something shows a complete disregard for any relationship you have had in the past.

“That is just a pathetic act of treachery.”

The future of the podcast is now in doubt.

“Won’t do it without Don, and even if he reconsiders it will not be the same,” Newman posted on social media later on Wednesday.

Scott arrived at the recording of the podcast around 9.30am on Wednesday and joined Newman in an awkward conversation for about 10 minutes before dropping his bombshell.

He then calmly walked out.

Scott said he was late arriving for the podcast recording because he was tired after trimming the hooves of four horses the day before.

Newman told Scott on air that not letting him know that he would be participating in the podcast this week, but would be late arriving, was “ignorant and rude.”

“And that is how I started shouting at you because you were ignorant and rude last week,” Newman said.

Asked by Newman if he would be doing the podcast anymore, Scott stunned with his reply.

“No,” he said.

“At the moment, no.”

Moments before his announcement Scott told Newman he did not want to back over the verbal blow up the week before.

“I am not getting into this,” he said.

“This is like a domestic and nobody wins in a domestic.

“You can put your view as much as you like and I am not here to defend or whatever else.

“Everybody has a different personality. I am not in to conflict.”

On last week’s episode Newman blew his stack at Scott over his fiddling with the recording equipment and eating biscuits on air while they were interviewing sports writer and author Ken Piesse.

“Holy shit. Jesus Christ, if you touch that f--king thing again. Stop it, I’m serious, f--k you, God almighty,” Newman said.

Scott replied: “Come on, get on with the interview.”

Newman continued: “I can’t do it. If you could f--king do something properly for once in your f--king life, don’t touch the microphone and speak into it and stop eating. F--k. Go out, go home.”

Newman went on to suggest a book could be written about Scott.

“You should write a book on Don Scott and people he knows and people he pisses off. I reckon that would sell a million copies because that is about the most annoying person I’ve ever f--king met,” he said.

“He’s dismantled two microphones, he’s broken two sets of headphones, he’s eaten, he f--king, can’t pronounce a word properly and he’s gone. I’m sorry about that, but it’s suddenly become bliss.”

Scott said he was sad to leave the podcast but a break was needed after the recent on air blow up.

“I am sad about it because more of these things (podcasts) for people’s general awareness should be out there,” he said.

“Unfortunately, with newspapers, radio and television there is always a commercial aspect to it and they can’t report exactly how things really are, they have to filter their commentary because of commercial interests and advertisers. We did not have any of those restrictions on us with the podcast.”

He said the podcast had opened his eyes to issues in the community.

“The podcast for me has been fantastic. It has really made me aware of issues within our society,” he said.

“We are being governed very poorly and the state of our leaders leave a lot to be desired at all three levels of government.”

Scott left the door slightly ajar for a return to the podcast should Newman, who he described as “exceptional” and “one of the smartest men in media”, decide to keep it going.

“I would consider returning, but a lot of things would have to change behind the scenes,” he said.

Scott said on Wednesday morning he was now contemplating writing his own book.
