Premier sledged by cheeky racehorse name

Daniel Andrews is the inspiration behind a racehorse’s name, with the owner saying the cheeky dig at the Premier’s marathon lockdown orders was an “obvious choice”.

No prizes for guessing the inspiration behind the name of the racehorse Before Dan.

The three-year-old gelding, which is trained by Paddy Payne at Ballarat, is being prepared for its first race start.

The horse is sired by Ilovethiscity out of a mare called Skewer.

Before Dan was the obvious name, according to owner David Price.

“Sometimes a name just jumps out off the page and then I just have to sweat on whether we will be allowed to register it or if there is a wowser who will say no,” Price said.

While the name Before Dan was accepted by the Registrar of Racehorses without any drama, another was bounced.

“We wanted to call a horse Treloar Trade (inspired by Adam Treloar’s move from Collingwood to the Western Bulldogs) but that was considered too controversial in terms of the AFL and was rejected,” Price, an avid Bulldogs supporter, said.

“We ended up calling that one Treloar.”

Price has form for giving his gallopers cheeky lockdown inspired names.

In January All Of Brighton, sired by Needs Further, made its racing debut.

The name was inspired by Melbourne lockdown identity ‘Karen from Brighton.’

Back to Before Dan, the horse has so far had two trials as it gets ready for its first race start.

In its most recent trial at Tatura, Before Dan trailed home King Dick.
