Pin-up Danish Royal, Prince Nikolai, the nephew of Princess Mary, is being hotly pursued to be part of Melbourne Cup action.

A royal hottie with a princely title, form as a model and who boasts a hugely famous Australian aunt, is very much in the sights of crafty curators of Spring Racing guest list for the sport of kings.
Each year hosts of racing marquees like to stack their enclosure with a plethora of interesting, newsworthy VIP guests and the name bubbling around the top of ambitious wishlists is that of Count Nikolai of Monpezat also known as Prince Nikolai of Denmark.
The battle for VIP guests can often be as competitive as the races themselves.
The young Prince is in Sydney studying at university for six months with his girlfriend Benedikte Thoustrup and is signed to Kult Models.
Feelers have certainly gone out to see if he is interested in a day at the races with the Victoria Racing Club in the hunt while other brands also circle.
Should he be lured to Flemington during Melbourne Cup Week Nikolai won’t be the first Danish Royal to appear at the track.
Former South Melbourne resident Mary Donaldson, now Princess Mary, was a guest of a champagne marquee in the Flemington Birdcage on Melbourne Cup Day in 2002 with her then boyfriend, now husband, Prince Frederik of Denmark.
Nikolai’s father Prince Joachim is the younger brother of Prince Frederik.
Mary is Nikolai’s aunt.by marriage.
The couple were surprisingly low key with minimal security during their Cup Day in the corporate marquee enclosure which was unexpected given the huge news interest in their relationship and pending engagement at the time.
Frederik lined up with other racegoers to put on a bet and Mary popped into the public loos in the Birdcage.
They didn’t do media, but they weren’t hidden away and seemed to have a blast with their close group of Australian mates.
It was a different time.
I remember the morning of the Cup getting a call from a Danish magazine asking what this Cup thing was and what would Mary and Fred be doing there?
Having a champagne and bet like the other 90,000 people was my answer.
