A jumble of household items and clothing owned by the late Australian superstar Olivia Newton-John has gone under the hammer in Los Angeles with a leather biker jacket she wore in the iconic film, Grease, fetching $749,645.84 (AU) ($476,250 US).
The sale, described as ‘Property From the Estate of Olivia Newton-John’ featured an array of mundane household items such as glassware, cutlery, Christmas decorations, chairs, towel racks and trinkets, but also included outfits she had worn on stage and at significant public occasions, a handwritten speech that she gave at Parliament House in 2017, sketches done by the great entertainer, jewellery and even the program from the state memorial in Melbourne in February 2023 where Newton-John’s life was celebrated.
Other items of significance to be auctioned off were her ARIA Hall of Fame award which was presented to her in 2002, which fetched $19,990 (AU) ($12,700 US), her 1974 American Music Award for favourite country female vocalist and two ARIA Chart Awards that recognised the success of her ‘Friends for Christmas’ album with John Farnham and the Two Strong Hearts album she did with Farnham.
Even her expired 2014 Australian and 2012 UK passports, lapsed 2000 Californian drivers license, and several US permanent resident cards were sold off.
The hero piece of the auction, conducted by Julien’s Auctions on Saturday, was Newton-John’s famous leather jacket which she wore during the legendary, You’re the One That I Want, scene in Grease.
Newton-John originally sold the jacket through Julien’s Auctions in 2019 for $382,811 (AU) ($243,200 US).
The buyer stunned Newton-John by then giving the jacket back to her and she kept it as a treasured possession until her death in August 2022.
