Neil Mitchell says the only aim of his segment with Eddie McGuire is to make ‘good radio’

3AW broadcaster Neil Mitchell says Eddie McGuire needs to change one thing if their controversial on-air segment is to continue.

Another frosty on-air moment for Neil Mitchell and Eddie McGuire on 3AW

The uneasy radio ‘bromance’ between Neil Mitchell and Eddie McGuire is on borrowed time if the pair can’t stop spatting.

It was Mitchell’s idea to invite McGuire to be part of his 3AW morning show with an Ideas Factory segment and the pair are two of the most connected and proud Melburnians who always want the best for the city.

But the segment has had an awkward start. A recent blow up over Collingwood footballer Jordan De Goey has overshadowed the purpose of the fortnightly spot and on Thursday’s prickly segment Mitchell made a crack about McGuire having a glass jaw and McGuire described Mitchell as condescending.

Mitchell acknowledged on Friday the segment needed to improve, but said he wanted McGuire to remain part of the show.

“We said from the start we would give it a few weeks and see how it went and we are still doing that,” Mitchell said.

“I was a bit disappointed yesterday (Thursday). I thought it was a bit flat. I don’t mind him having a go at me, that is fine, but you got to have engaging radio and we are trying to do that.

“The only aim of this is good radio and that is all I am after. I don’t want headlines, I don’t want nastiness, I don’t want ‘Mitchell fights Eddie’, I just want good radio.

“I hope we can make it work and I hope we can make it work better than it is; it needs to work better than it is.”

Mitchell, who is the No1 morning radio host in Melbourne with a 19 per cent audience share, is contracted to 3AW until the end of June 2023.

He said he was focused on doing his best for his audience and his show.

“I am not thinking about it, I am not worrying about it,” he said.

“I think when you are in a job like this, if you spend your time worrying about how long you are going to do (it) you don’t focus on the job. I want to do it while I am enjoying it, while I think I am doing it well, our ratings are good, we are getting good reactions, we are achieving a bit, (and) it is good fun.

“Channel 9 has made it clear they want me to continue as long as I want to, either full-time or not full-time and I will have a think about that in six or eight months time.”
