Neil Mitchell, Eddie McGuire in tense on-air argument over Jordan De Goey

An ugly exchange got personal as it dramatically played out on air, with Eddie McGuire and Neil Mitchell sniping at each other after the radio host labelled Jordan De Goey a “Bali boofhead”.

Eddie McGuire and Neil Mitchell are embroiled in a bitter war of words, after McGuire accused the 3AW broadcaster of mocking Collingwood star Jordan De Goey and his mental health.

In a renewing of the opinionated pair’s tense relationship, McGuire slammed Mitchell’s take on the De Goey situation in which he labelled him a “Bali boofhead”.

Mitchell hit back at McGuire during a heated exchange on Thursday morning, with the pair trading barbs and talking over each other — Mitchell called McGuire “a nasty bastard” and McGuire said he had “sooked up”.

During 30 minutes of agitated radio that got personal, McGuire said Mitchell lied by omission in asking him to come on his program because he didn’t want a debate, and instead said he wanted to discuss the broader issue of mental health.

Mitchell took exception to being called a liar. “One thing I’ve got in my life is my reputation. I’m not a liar. I’ve got a right to defend my integrity,” he said.

McGuire said Mitchell had driven people to “very dark places” and implored Mitchell to “toughen up” when it comes to copping a return serve of criticism.

De Goey, 26, has taken a leave of absence and will not play this weekend in the wake of his mid-season Bali jaunt.

Within the apology for his actions, the midfielder revealed he is suffering from ADHD.

Mitchell labelled De Goey a “Bali boofhead”on his 3AW show on Wednesday.

“Neil Mitchell made mockery of his mental health condition today,” McGuire said on Footy Classified later that evening.

“A Bali boofhead and everything … Neil is a senior person.”

He added: “Good on you Neil, didn’t miss him on the way through.”

Mitchell had commented: “I’m not questioning De Goey’s diagnosis, that’s a personal matter for him, but he’s raised it.

“It is it a justification, is it a legitimate excuse? It can’t be a go-to for every AFL player in trouble: ‘Oh dear, I’ve got this mental health condition.’

“Does ADHD turn you into a misogynistic, anti-social Bali boofhead?”

Mitchell began his program on Thursday by saying he wouldn’t be lectured by a person with a track record like McGuire’s.

“Remember this is the same Eddie who called Adam Goodes ‘King Kong’ and wanted to drown Caroline Wilson at the Big Freeze. To paraphrase Julia Gillard, I will not be lectured on decency by this man,’’ Mitchell said.

“I would normally ignore a massive sledge I copped from Eddie McGuire on TV last night but I can’t ignore it.

“Because the serious point is, he’s accusing me of mocking mental health problems.

“That’s ridiculous. Have a look at my record, that’s just garbage.”

Mitchell said he had been supportive of De Goey, but McGuire said there were bigger issues at play.

“I’m not an apologist for Jordan De Goey, I’m being a person who has a standing in football … there is a debate to look at where the moral line is these days, our company Nine Media have shows like Married At First Sight and Love Island … there is a completely different moral standard that’s going through the community and how the lines get blurred,’’ McGuire said.

He then stood by his opinion that Mitchell went too far.

“I’ve got two people that I know that you went after,’’ McGuire said.

“And it didn’t end up well. I respect you as a broadcaster, but sometimes you get it wrong.”

Mitchell and McGuire recently became colleagues after Mitchell enlisted the former Triple M Hot Breakfast host as a regular guest on his Mornings show for a fortnightly “idea factory” segment.

McGuire has previously called Mitchell a shock jock and “grumpy Neil”.

Mitchell said last month that McGuire was a “loose cannon”.

“Eddie and I have been discussing, arguing, laughing together for probably 30 years, so why don’t we put it on air,” Mitchell said.
