In what could be a storyline ripped from the script of the show, it seems the Neighbours studio in suburban Melbourne has a ghost.
Well, maybe not a ghost, but a restless spirit or two that apparently live within the props warehouse at the show’s Nunawading base.
As the final ever episode of Neighbours approaches, stories from the show’s heady days continue to emerge and among those recollections have been stories of strange experiences over the years in the props bay.
Kate Kendall, who was a cast member on the show before becoming a director, said she had heard of the stories from several of the show’s long-time crew members and had herself felt an unusual “vibe” in the building.
“I just think it has an interesting spiritual energy out there (in the warehouse),” Kendall said.
“There is so much history there, all the secret pockets, the huge studio and the massive storage area.
“I just know I have felt energy out there and other people have said they have too.”
One account of an unexplained experience came from a former crew member who said he was walking through the props area and saw a short man looking through some cables.
The figure disappeared suddenly and when the crew member asked around as to who he was he was told no one fitting that description worked on the show.
Another said he had heard voices late at night in the warehouse.
And one told of seeing a female figure walk past them, that no one else saw.
All very mysterious and odd.
If theatres, such as Melbourne’s Princess Theatre and the story of Federici, can apparently have ghosts living in them then why can’t a TV studio that produced stars such as Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan?
“A lot of people hear things upstairs, but that is because it is an old building,” Kendall said.
“I know how much work and energy has gone into the place and what a living institution it has been and how many people have walked though those corridors. There is just so much history there. For me it is an incredibly special place, as it is for so many other people.”
She added: “There is a lot of spiritual history there.”
