Richmond premiership star Nathan Broad has told of the freak accident that saw him almost lose his “manhood.”
A bizarre footy accident left Broad with the skin sliced open around his genitalia leaving him perilously close to losing his penis.
The injury occurred during a game of kick to kick when he was 12.
“I got out of the pool and me and a couple of mates were just kicking the footy, mucking around, and I was running backwards and my mate was trying to tackle me and I tripped on my own feet and his knee kind of knee-ed me in the groin,” Broad told Triple M’s The Rush Hour.
Realising something was wrong, Broad was left reeling after checking out the damage and realising his private parts had been torn and were definitely not looking or feeling like they should.
“I had a look and the old ‘johnson’ was hanging out like a chook’s neck,” he recalled.
“Lucky the beans were there because they held it back. If it wasn’t for the beans …
“My old man is a bit of a tough bastard from the country, no hospitals, and we were a long way from the hospital.
“I said ‘Dad, come and have a look,’ and he goes ‘get in the car now,’ no ambulance, we flew to hospital and he carried me in like a baby.”
The unusual injury left hospital staff scratching their heads.
“They were blown away, they were making phone calls around the world, they had no idea what to do,” he said.
“It was literally just hanging by the beans and it (the tear) went all the way around back to the start. A perfect cut, hardly any blood.”
The top Tiger said the impact of the knee into his groin had stretched the skin resulting in the injury which was eventually stitched back up.
“They took a few inches off me, I reckon,” he quipped.
Broad is expecting his first child with his wife Tayla later this year.
