A Melbourne foodie is fuelling pop superstar Madonna’s world tour and was the reason why the Material Girl told Gordon Ramsay to ‘f**k off’.
Madonna’s personal chef is an Aussie who hails from Collingwood and has spent a lifetime honing her cooking craft.
Pia Hambour, 35, has been working as Madonna’s personal chef - “everybody calls her M” - for the past 19 months, having started with the pop queen in August 2022.
She has been travelling with the music legend and her family for the past seven months as part of Madonna’s Celebration world tour.
“I enjoy working for her and family. She has a good sense of humour. It is once in a lifetime opportunity. I am very lucky,” Hambour said.
Hambour even joined Madonna on stage in Cologne.
“During the song Vogue they do a ballroom set up and she has a guest come up on stage,” Hambour said.
“In Cologne I was serving her lunch and she was like ‘Pia do you want to be in the chair tonight?’
“I wasn’t sure if she was joking, because she jokes a lot, then the kids came into the kitchen and I asked ‘Is she serious?’ and they were like ‘Yeah!’.
“It was so much fun.”
Cooking on tour comes with its challenges.
“It is definitely an adventure, for sure. I have had to learn as I go, lots of pivoting, lots of quick thinking on your feet,” she said.
“Each city is completely different, sometime we will be in a city where she has a house so I can spread out and relax and have an oven and then sometimes I am in a hotel room with a camper oven and an insta-pot and that is it.”
Hambour, who is a contestant on Channel 9’s Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars, grew up in South Australia and moved to Melbourne in her early 20s. She did her apprenticeship at MoVida and worked in various establishments before opening her own cafe in Collingwood.
“Then one day I got my tax return and was like I am going to go to New York,” she said.
In the Big Apple she worked at Mission Chinese, then cult pizza joint Roberta’s in Brooklyn before having to come back to Melbourne during the pandemic.
While in lockdown she created her Bodega Deli brand which features hot sauces, spice blends, hot honey and oils.
In early 2022 while growing her Bodega Deli business she heard through friends who work in the private chef realm, that Madonna was looking for a personal chef.
“I did a trial, I met the whole family and all the staff and she obviously liked me because here I am, still with her,” she said.
Hambour was working for Madonna when got the call up for Food Stars.
“I told her that I had this opportunity and asked if I could take some leave to be part of the
filming. She was very supportive,” she said.
So supportive in fact that Madonna agreed to take a phone call from Ramsay during the show. “Gordon called her and she was telling him to ‘f**k off’ and she wanted her chef back. She
was a very good sport. It was amazing,” Hambour said.
“I was stoked to be on his team, I was super, super happy that he chose me. It was great to come back and be part of the show.”
