Boozy stories are part and parcel of the Logies folklore as TV stars have one – or maybe quite a few - too many during what can be a long night what with pre-event drinks, the award ceremony, the official after-party, various network after parties and then the private after, after parties.
Hollywood star Margot Robbie surprised many by fessing up to her boozy blow out at the Logies when she was a fledgling soap actor on Neighbours, well before she became a queen of the big screen.
Robbie, 31, described the Logies as “just a big piss-up, everyone just gets absolutely hammered,” to US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel in a candid chat in 2019, revealing she had “got so drunk I passed out,” the second time she attended the event.
“The Logies are the funnest award shows ever,” Robbie told Kimmel.
“When I was 18 and it was the first one I went to, I mean it is like the Wild West. The second year I went, I got so drunk I passed out.
“I passed out in one of the toilet stalls and I woke up and I came out and it happened to be the one hour that the (venue) closes to be cleaned.
“Eventually I found someone who was cleaning and they were like, ‘What are you doing in here?’ I was like, ‘What time is it? I have to be at work’.”
Robbie said she went straight to the Neighbours set in her evening gown.
“The nurse at work gave me some oxygen and I felt great after that,” she said.
Robbie, who is playing Barbie in her next movie, played Donna Freeman on Neighbours from 2008 – 2011.
Boozy moments have caused headlines over the years from American actor Michael Cole having had one too many when he swore on live TV when accepting a Logie for Mod Squad in 1973 to Karl Stefanovic being “not at my best” as he was “not hungover, I was still drunk” when he co-hosted Today after a very big night at the 2009 awards.
Then there are the stories that don’t get told, like the newsreader who one year arrived at the event under the weather and before the telecast had even started was discreetly bundled into a car by quick thinking publicists and sent home.
As one former network publicist commented during the week, the great challenge of the Logies is to keep stars who like a drink from drinking too much on the night and keeping media away from celebrities that are over refreshed.
