Sophia Bana, daughter of actor Eric Bana, stepped out at her first event on Wednesday night as she embarks on a career in modelling.

Bana, 20, joined fellow model and dancer Portia Talib at the opening of ACMI’s new exhibition in partnership with Britain’s Tate galleries.

Light: Works from Tate’s Collection features more than 70 exhibits that harness the phenomenon of light across 200 years of art history.

Logies nominees Rachel Griffiths and Bernard Curry also stepped out, as did actor Sigrid Thornton, Magpies netballer Geva Mentor and interior designer Shaynna Blaze.

Griffiths said she wouldn’t be attending TV’s big awards night on Sunday due to her daughter’s 13th birthday.

She told the opening night crowd the ACMI exhibition offered an opportunity “to see art in a new light”, and that it would “bring audiences back to the city to celebrate all that is marvellous about marvellous Melbourne”.

“This show is extraordinary,” Griffiths said.

“I just walked through it and my little brain has been blown.

“You’ll come face to face with works by Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.”

Griffiths, an ACMI board member, also named Olafur Eliasson’s striking hanging sculpture Stardust Particle, James Turrell’s immersive installation Raemar, Blue and Lis Rhodes’ seminal Light Music as her highlights.

The exhibition opens on June 16.
