Liz Cambage lauds fellow Australian star Ben Simmons for record breaking pay deal

Liz Cambage couldn’t be more happy for fellow Australian basketball star Ben Simmons and his new pay deal but there is something about the astronomical figure that troubles the WNBA player.

Basketball superstar Liz Cambage has lauded fellow Australia star Ben Simmons on his multimillion-dollar pay deal while saying the astronomical figure makes her sad but not bitter.

Simmons has reportedly been offered a five-year NBA contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers worth $240 million.

Cambage, who plays for the Las Vegas Aces and is one of the world’s top female basketballers, is playing for nothing like that.

“It is so good for him. I have known Ben since he was about 13-years-old and it is amazing to see the man he has grown into and the player he has become,“ Cambage said.

“It is hard though, it is hard knowing that maybe if I was born a man and doing the exact same thing I would have more money than sense.

“But it never makes me bitter. It makes me sad that if I have children and if I have a daughter and a son he is going to make so much more money if they both want to play sport.

“That is the thing that gets me upset, how am I going to sit down and tell my future daughter that her brother is probably going to make 100 times more money than she ever will?

“At the end of the day, especially here in America, we don’t want to be making the money the men make, we are not stupid.

“We know the WNBA is not making billions of dollars like the NBA, but we want to be in a place where we don’t have to play basketball all year round.

“A lot of female athletes only have time off when they injure themselves.”

Long interested in fashion, Cambage has signed with Bonds as the face of the Bonds Retro Rib Get Real campaign.

“You look at the magazines and watch TV (in Australia) and there is no diversity at all,” she said.

“Especially for a country which claims to be multicultural, I have never seen it in any of the media or on TV.

“So I am very proud to be part of this with Bonds.

Cambage’s personal goals are set firmly on next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

“This is the road to Tokyo. I am all in. I have unfinished business with the Olympics.”
