Fashion influencer and footy WAG Tayla Damir has used reality TV to confront her often crippling self doubt.
Damir, who has spoken openly about her mental health challenges in recent years, said she had struggled with a fear of failure stopping her saying yes to opportunities and challenges.
Throwing herself into a giant, extreme athletic course as part of a reality TV test has been a way for her to break through that self doubt and anxiety.
“I have a real complex where I have been associating not being perfect at something as being associated with failure, so for me I have really struggled with that for most of my life and it stopped me giving things a go because in my mind it is like ‘Well, if I am not perfect at it I am not going to do it,” Damir said.
“And I kind of just had this moment of realisation that if I don’t start throwing myself into things like Australian Ninja Warrior, that complex and that mindset is never going to get better.”
Damir will compete in tomorrow night’s episode of Ninja Warrior, putting herself to the test on the enormous and confronting course.
“It is something that has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and challenge other people’s perception of me too,” she said.
“I think that is a pretty cool opportunity.”
Damir, who previously appeared on Love Island Australia, has not ruled out doing more TV.
“I love being on the screen,” she said.
“Where I am most comfortable is in front of the camera, whether that be with Myer modelling or whether it be something like this (reality TV).
Damir, who is engaged to Richmond premiership player Nathan Broad, is busy planning her wedding.
“I am trying to find the enjoyment in all of it and I am sure on the day it will all come together, but as people would know, planning a wedding is no small task,” she said.
“I have been really lucky, I have an incredible wedding planner who is helping with every step along the way, she is brilliant, and Nath has just learnt to shake his head and say ‘Yes’.”
The couple will tie the knot at a ‘destination wedding’ at the end of the year.
“We can finally travel so why not make the most of it,” she said.
