Hey Hey It’s Saturday favourite Wilbur Wilde says he is honoured to pay tribute to his dear friend, John Blackman at his funeral.
Blackman, who passed away last week aged 76, will be farewelled at private service in Melbourne later this month where Wilde will be the celebrant.
“I am honoured to have been asked by Cecile and Tiffany (Blackman’s wife and daughter) to be the celebrant at my old mate’s send off,” Wilde said.
Wilde described Blackman as a wonderful friend who was a vital part of Hey Hey It’s Saturday’s success.
“He was a father figure, a hero, a comedy doctor, an attitude coach and a dear friend,” he said.
“I have said it before, but no Blackers, no Hey Hey. He turned a kids show into a very enjoyable adult show. He blazed that trail for everybody else. It was still a great kids show but the adults could watch it as well because he would come in with his one liners. He was better than cheeky.”
Wilde has performed the role of celebrant at a funeral once this year and found the experience profound. He intends to continue to develop his skills in the space.
Unlike marriage celebrants, funeral celebrants are not required to take formal training and be registered. They traditionally collaborate with the funeral director and help the family put together a service that best reflects the life of the departed.
“I will be standing up and just introducing the speakers (at the service), it is not about me,” he said.
“I will say my name, ‘I am Wilbur Wilde, I am a friend of John’s and I am your celebrant’.”
