Controversial broadcaster Kyle Sandilands has weighed into the ‘Spearmint Rhino’ drama engulfing ABC Melbourne’s Sharnelle and Bob breakfast radio show, saying the outrage over the ill-advised comment was a beat up and predicting that the pairing was not going to last.
The show, hosted by former TV reporter Sharnelle Vella and ex-Western Bulldogs player Bob Murphy, hit the headlines last week after Murphy, in a failed attempt at humour, jokingly suggested Vella had once worked at Spearmint Rhino - a well known Melbourne strip club.
Vella has never worked at the venue nor in any other adult entertainment venue. She was unimpressed.
On Thursday, a contrite Murphy gave an emotional apology on air for disrespecting Vella and backtracked on his ill-judged comment.
Vella’s response was frosty. The exchange was awkward and uncomfortable listening.
The show may be only 10 weeks old, but Vella and Murphy sound like strangers in the studio.
They need to find some cohesion, connection and understanding of each other.
Sandilands, while backing Murphy who he described as “a woke ex-footballer” who “seems like a nice enough fellow, I don’t know who he is”, said the blow up over the strip club comment and subsequent apology had doomed the show.
“That’ll be the end of that show, how uncomfortable,” Sandilands said after playing Murphy’s apology and Vella’s frosty reply to his KIIS audience.
“It is not going to work.”
Added Jackie O: “They don’t have chemistry.”
Sandilands said he had “jumped on his (Murphy’s) side because ‘I don’t think the guy needs to be abused in the press,’ and described the comment as a Murphy “trying to be funny” and failing.
“They don’t know each other, they are trying to get a connection …….. it is two people trying to do a radio show.”
Vella and Murphy rated 5.6 in the most recent Melbourne radio survey with The Kyle & Jackie O Show rating 5.8.
Last month Murphy on one occasion slept through his alarm and was absent for the first 40 minutes of the ABC breakfast show.
