After an arduous and testing battle with an aggressive form of skin cancer, much-loved radio and voice-over artist John Blackman is back in the voiceover booth.
Blackman got back behind the microphone for the latest Hey Hey It’s Saturday special titled Hey Hey It’s 100 Years which aired on Channel 7 last Sunday.
Blackman’s warm and immediately identifiable voice opened the show and announced Daryl Somers as host. He also closed the show, speaking over the closing credits.
It was a lovely voice cameo from a key figure in the Hey Hey success story. He also did the intro for the Hey Hey special marking the show’s 50th anniversary last year.
Blackman was faced with a shocking health crisis when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancer, known as basal-cell carcinoma, in August 2018.
The cancer was discovered after he had what he thought was an inflamed pimple checked by a doctor.
The treatment was immediate and extreme: his jaw removed and replaced with a part of his thigh bone in a marathon 12-hour operation.
In the years following the initial procedure Blackman has undergone several significant surgeries and procedures to rebuild his jaw.
Blackman has always maintained his trademark positivity and quick wit and hearing his trademark vocals welcome viewers to the Hey Hey special was a gift to longtime fans of Blackman and the show.
There is plenty more Hey Hey ahead on Seven this year with two Red Faces specials to be rolled out.
