HE is no stranger to putting on an act, but Mick Molloy is making a surprise return to the big screen as part of a racing drama.
Molloy was on the set of Ride Like A Girl, the Rachel Griffiths-helmed film inspired by Michelle Payne’s historic victory in the 2015 Melbourne Cup on 100-1 shot Prince of Penzance.
Molloy, whose film pedigree includes Crackerjack, Bad Eggs and Boytown, was playing a hardened racehorse trainer by the name of “Bairdy’’.

Although a minor character, Molloy came to set full of interesting ideas clearly inspired more by Benny Hill than Dick Francis.
“My trainer would ask Michelle to ride side saddle,” he said on Triple M.
“I want to do a nude scene but apparently even the horses are refusing to be in a nude scene with me.
“Maybe I could use the Melbourne Cup as a chamber pot?
“I did pitch to them we could rewrite the film and in the closing scene instead of Michelle riding it, I ride it, I ride the horse across the line, it is in a photo and I chuck a brown eye.”
Ride Like A Girl finished its main unit shoot at Caulfield on Friday and will wrap filming completely later this week.
ALSO wrapping filming in Melbourne on Friday was Angel of Mine, a feature starring Swedish actor Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale), Richard Roxburgh and Luke Evans.
The film, written by Luke Davies who penned the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated Lion, has been shooting around Black Rock, Sandringham, North Melbourne and St Kilda.
