Lehmann and Jo Stanley were stunned when told their successful program would be axed at almost the same time as they won the November rating survey.

“We were number one and then we got sacked. We were idiots. We should never have gone to number one,” Lehmann said.

“I have spoken to Jo, and said we got ahead of ourselves, it was a mistake to work so hard and get ourselves to number one. If we had our time again we would stay middle of the pack and we possibly would still have a job.

“It definitely came out of left field and we were super disappointed because Jo and I really loved the station and we really love our listeners, and will miss them.”

Lehmann said neither he nor Stanley saw the axe coming, with both believing the show had a healthy future.

“The accepted philosophy in radio is you give a show two years to see if it is going to work, so we were absolutely text book, survey seven of year two we went number one,” he said.

“I am pretty sure that every program director in the country would say I will have that every single day of the week except for our program director, who decided that the station was going to go in a different direction.

“We have all accepted it now and we are moving on.”

Lehmann was commentating on the polo at the Portsea Polo on Saturday.

“I am a man who loves a challenge and when you get asked to commentate on a sport that you know nearly nothing about, that is the definition of a challenge,” he said.

“I am a sports tragic, I could watch two flies race up a wall and I would be happy.”
