Derby Day 2018: All the wild antics at the races

IS Melbourne enduring a celebrity drought?

Stars were bafflingly few and far between in the normally celebrity-studded Flemington Birdcage during Cup Week, in fact search parties should have been called in to try and flush out a few more famous faces.

Sure Elle Macpherson, Lara Worthington and Usain Bolt provided nice interludes for star watchers, but when a flatline appearance by Scott Disick, an American party boy famous for breeding with the least famous Kardashian sister, is one of the highlights of the Birdcage then things were pretty dire on the celebrity front.

Clapped out reality cranks (memo to most — your 15 minutes was up long ago and please cease this ridiculous habit of wanting to approve your photos. Elle can get away with it, you can’t) and boring instagrammers who struggled to hold a conversation when they weren’t madly snapping and posting selfies, invaded the corporate hospitality enclosure in plague proportions this year.

The Birdcage marquees were all masterful (and fun) in their own way with Lexus setting a new standard for luxury in the competitive corporate space.

But Myer, with its crowd of beautiful people, arty types and the showstopping Jennifer Hawkins, was definitely missed in the Birdcage, with the retailer having ditched its marquee to concentrate on Fashions On The Field in The Park enclosure.

Missing from the marquees this year were many established names of TV, sport and society.

And where were the power posers of the fashion world who can turn the head of even the most jaded scribe?

Someone please find them in time for next year’s carnival.
