Leading footy commentator and great of the game Wayne Carey has admitted he is harbouring a quiet hope that his new young son will inherit his love of football.

Leading footy commentator and great of the game Wayne Carey is harbouring a quiet hope that his young son inherits his love of football.

Carey and his partner, Jessica Paulke, welcomed their first child, Carter Michael Carey, on Saturday, February 2.

The bundle of joy weighed 4.18kg and was 57cm in length.

Carey said he and Paulke were over the moon and Carter’s siblings were thrilled to have a baby brother.

“We are really excited,” Carey said on Saturday. “He is a beautiful, healthy baby, very calm like his mother, is sleeping well and eating well.

“Jess couldn’t be better.

“We are looking forward to a great year.”

Carey said he was daring to hope footy might be a part of his son’s life, a tantalising prospect for those obsessed with father-son drafts and second-generation players.

“I think every ex-footballer dreams or hopes that their son or daughter might want to follow in their sporting footsteps, but he will make his own decisions as he grows up,” Carey said.

“But I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t want him to play the game his father loved playing and being a part of so much.”

Carey, a Triple M and Channel 7 footy commentator, and Paulke, a model, were first spotted as a couple at the Australian Open last year. They had been dating for some time prior to that outing.
