AFL boss Gillon McLachlan is on the move after dropping millions on a stunning trophy home.
The magnificent double story mansion in one of Prahran’s most elegant streets, was sold privately in July for $13.5 million.
For months local chatter in the leafy strip has been that the footy chief and his family had purchased the grand home, just a short stroll from their current home ground.
The home last sold publicly for $700,000 in 1986.
The street is peppered with mansions that reflect Melbourne’s boom time period, but you need deep pockets and an appreciation of quality and history to call the up-market street home.
In 2020 it was reported the 1880 six-bedroom mansion up the road changed hands for $16 million.
A drop punt away, another imposing home sold for $12.75m in 2016. Reports also note that a neighbouring property sold for $9.65m in 2021.
McLachlan has been active in the property space in recent months.
In August, he and wife Laura listed their six-bedroom Prahran home for sale with a price guide of $10 million to $11 million.
The property, which was being promoted as one of only two homes in the suburb with a tennis court, has since been taken off the market.
The home was the location of an onsite auction of all the contents of the house in June.
The auction of antiques and art was conducted by auctioneer Christian McCann.
The Australian Auction Review reported McCann had known the vendors for 15 years during which time he had helped them build a collection to complement the grandeur of each historic room in the mansion.
The auction on June 5 featured fine French and English antique furniture and collectables, traditional Australian and European art and garden statuary.
McLachlan will soon have more time on his hands as he finishes up in his role with the AFL. Although his replacement and his own new job are yet to be revealed.
