Melburnians love their caffeine, so does George Calombaris risk public blowback calling an episode of his show “coffee wanker”?

Coffee snobs may well take offence at the name of George Calombaris’s latest episode of his foodie series, Hungry — Coffee Wanker.

Just who is being labelled in that unflattering manner is unclear but the episode promises to delve into Melbourne’s over the top obsession with caffeinated brews.

The former MasterChef host, who presents Hungry alongside Sarah Todd, has reflected on the no frills series he is now fronting compared to the luxury of his MasterChef heyday in an Instagram live.

“I came off MasterChef, which was huge, to go into this show that was just you (Todd), me, a couple of cameramen, a couple of producers, and you were pretty much doing my makeup,” he said.

Todd added she had another role, as well, during filming.

“First of all, I was George’s wardrobe so carried his clothes around the street, everywhere,” she said.

“I think it is nice to take away all the glitz and glam of MasterChef and to shoot this show. It is really raw and real.”

Sitting in the 6.30pm Saturday timeslot on Channel 10 means Hungry is not going to draw a huge audience.

The show debuted last Saturday with 69,000 overnight metro viewers, 23,000 of them in Melbourne and 16,000 in Sydney. Regional viewers added another 29,000 viewers to the mix, giving the show a national overnight figure (metro + regional) of 98,000.

But, to be fair, those figures are pretty good compared to the flop that is The Challenge.

Ten ran a double episode of the underperforming series on Monday, November 28 with the first episode pulling 96,000 and the next episode drawing a mere 72,000 metro overnight viewers according to the official ratings.
