Melbourne’s Dr Matt Agnew has emerged from his self-imposed post-Bachelor seclusion revealing he intentionally stepped out of the spotlight to “put himself back together” after going through the reality wringer.

Agnew has been hard to find since his relationship with Chelsie McLeod imploded last December, six months after they fell for each other on The Bachelor.

“It was very intentional,” he said of his disappearing act.

“It was an element of normality I was seeking, but the big thing for me was I was just putting myself back together.

“I did not come out of both the show and the relationship in great shape and I needed time with my close friends and family to pick myself up and put myself back together, really.”

Agnew said he and McLeod had not stayed in touch and while their relationship fizzled out he did not regret his time as The Bachelor.

“It changed my life, yes, to a degree it has,” he said.

“I certainly don’t regret it, it did not work out for me, but it has worked out for a lot of people in the past.

“It has certainly given me the opportunity to continue to talk about science to a broad audience which is something I am really passionate about.”

Agnew, who has dumped his slick Bachelor look for floppy long hair and a bushy beard, was among the guests at the (COVID-safe) opening of Imaginaria, an immersive play experience at the District Docklands.

The astrophysicist and data scientist debuted his Dr Matt Agnew’s Guide to Life Beyond Earth show at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in February.

He said he hoped to take the space themed show to various capital cities next year post COVID-19.
