A BLOW-UP over a carparking spot has caused a stir between Footy Show star Sam Newman and producer Harvey Silver.
The pair traded strong words in what sources described as a tense discussion in The Footy Show production office late last month.
Newman confirmed he took Silver to task for pinching his space on the chilly Docklands Studio lot.
TENSIONS BOIL OVER BETWEEN MCGUIRE AND BARRETT
IS SAM NEWMAN THE MOST DISLIKED AFL PERSONALITY?
“I did not have a barney with him, I was just wondering why he or anyone else would park in a designated spot that was mine, that was all,” Newman said. “It wasn’t a disagreement, it was a point of procedure.
“It sounds pretty petty but I have a carpark designated to me and I expect it to be available when I drive my car in and it is not so much about the car park per se, it is about someone having some manners or a bit of respect for me.
“I don’t care where I park the car but if I am given a car spot I’d like it to be available when I get there.”
Newman denied a spectacular blow-up occurred or that either party stormed out of the office.
Others claim there was loud swearing and one party told the other they would never speak to them again.
“This was one of those ones that was funny a bit later but not so funny at the time,” Footy Show host Eddie McGuire said on Triple M, adding witches hats had been in place holding the park for Newman.
“It was a wet night and by the time Sam arrived he was (parked) in the next suburb. How would you expect Sam to react?”
Tensions on the set of the show are high with pressure from falling ratings and contract talks.
On the same night as Newman and Silver’s argument, McGuire and Damian Barrett had a loud and passionate debate over a proposed story.
Newman, 72, said he and Nine had begun discussions about his future with the network, with his contract set to expire at the end of the year.
“I enjoy what I do, I just need a vehicle (to be on) that gives me a chance to enjoy what I do,” he said when asked if he wanted to remain with Nine next year.
“I have no idea what the future holds, but for the 25 years that I have been doing it (The Footy Show) I have never had any idea what the future holds from year to year.”
